Preparing for the First Day of Classes

One week today, students across Canada will be heading back for another year of school. To help prepare for September 4th, I have produced a list of hints to help the first day of school run smoothly.

1.Know where you or your child is going

The first day can be very hectic. Throughout the mayhem, it can be very easy to get lost among the large group of people. To avoid the stressful and helpless feeling, it is important for both the parents and children to visit the school a day or two before classes, and learn the building’s layout. This helps ensure that you or your child will be organized, confident and have the knowledge to get to class on time.

Visiting the building before classes might be more important for children going to a new school, but each year, a student will be in new classes, and they will need to discover where those classes are held. Which means that every person should visit their school before September 4th.

2. Have a “talk” the night before

The next tip is more applicable for parents. The night of September 3rd, it is important to sit your child down and talk about the new school year. This talk includes what will happen on the first day of school and their expectations for the rest of the year.

For younger children new to the school environment, it might be the first time they are away from their parents for an extended period of time. In hopes of stopping a temper tantrum, or scaring your child, it is important to take this time to practice a good bye. Practicing the good bye will make it easier for your child to let go during the actual goodbye on the first day of school.

3. Be Friendly!

It’s finally here, the first day of school. Both parents and children can use this day to create bonds with teachers, parents and other children. Simple actions as making conversation, or helping your child to make conversation, shows that you are dedicated to learning and/or helping your child learn. First impressions are important, and may really help you down the road. So be friendly and show your commitment to education!

Anyways, thanks for reading, and if you like to, follow the link to our Facebook page to answer our weekly poll question. This week we asked: How do you switch from summer to school mode?

That’s all for know and I hope you enjoy the last week of summer vacation,

David
